Fewer realize that architects and urban planners play an equally vital role in humanitarian efforts. Architects Without Borders (AWB) is built upon this very principle: that professional expertise and human solidarity can go hand in hand, particularly when it comes to providing people with a place to call home.

The organization comprises architects, tradespeople, planners, and other dedicated professionals working to improve housing conditions in the world’s most impoverished and crisis-affected regions: be they refugee camps, slums, or villages devastated by natural disasters. Rather than shipping standardized emergency tents or expensive materials from afar, AWB focuses on sustainable solutions rooted in local conditions: culturally, economically, and practically.

A Philosophy of Resilience

The organization’s philosophy is simple yet profound: aid should not merely be given; it must be built from within. This involves actively engaging the local population in the construction process. By learning to build with local materials (such as clay, bamboo, or recycled timber) communities gain more than just shelter; they gain skills, employment, and a sense of ownership. When an area is rebuilt following a crisis, it is not just bricks being laid: it is the foundation for a new beginning.

AWB assists with everything from master-planning entire villages to teaching specific technical skills like earth-block masonry, the production of natural paints, or bamboo joinery. The goal is for individuals to be able to build their own homes and carry that knowledge forward, whether in their daily lives or when they eventually return home from a displacement camp. Ultimately, it is about restoring the belief that one can create something meaningful, even under the most harrowing circumstances.

Beyond Prestigious Projects

AWB serves as a form of architectural first-response, deploying when crises arise to build lasting structures rather than temporary fixes. Simultaneously, the organization fights to preserve local building traditions that are increasingly lost in a globalized world of architectural uniformity.

The organization welcomes anyone eager to contribute: not just architects, but those with experience in construction, education, or community development. Funding is sourced from members, foundations, private donations, and, in some instances, public grants.

In short: Architects Without Borders believes that architecture is not about grand facades or prestige; it is about people. It is about creating environments where life can be lived with dignity, even where everything else has collapsed.

Personal Reflections on the Genesis of AWB Denmark

In hindsight, I must admit I have always been a bit of an outlier. I am who I am, and if there were any fundamental flaws in my wiring, they were likely settled at conception.

Following my resignation from House Architects, I went through a period of relative isolation, spending a great deal of time conceptualizing new ideas. Eventually, a thought took hold that aligned more closely with my identity and capabilities. I possessed significant experience in developing nations, a solid architectural background, and an extensive knowledge of sustainability: all of which fit the Architects Without Borders ethos perfectly. I drafted a concept paper outlining what such an entity could look like.

I no longer recall exactly how it happened, but I made contact with an American architect, Craig Williams, who had conceived of the same idea at the same time. We communicated and I realized he was slightly further along in his planning. Rather than competing, we agreed that he would proceed and I would serve as the Danish representative for AWB.

However, my involvement in the years that followed was minimal. I was preoccupied with saving my marriage and soon uprooted our lives entirely to move to Bangladesh, eventually settling in South Africa. Years later, I received an email from a group of Danish architects who had discovered my link to AWB. I shared the history with them and introduced them to Craig so they could take over the development of the organization.

They have since succeeded in elevating AWB to heights far beyond what it achieved under my somewhat “absentee regime.” Still, one cannot help but wonder why so many years had to pass before others found interest in the idea.

Most are familiar with Doctors Without Borders: the organization where physicians volunteer in the world’s conflict zones to provide emergency relief to those in need.
