Meaning of the word Koyannisquatsi in Hopi language – A World out of balance

This series of artworks was produced in South Africa in 2012 and was subsequently exhibited at the renowned Fried Contemporary Gallery in Pretoria.
The underlying theme is the mind of a child, gazing into a crystal ball that reveals the realities of the contemporary world. These realities include life on South Africa’s garbage dumps, ship-breaking yards in Bangladesh, hidden messages in art, and Bill Clinton’s books sold by street children in Dhaka, books with pages, yet empty of words and ink.
The paintings are based on my own experiences, seen through the lens of my camera.
In contrast to the eyes of the child, brain scans of my own brain have been incorporated into many of the works. I leave it to the viewer to bring these elements together and form their own coherent interpretation.
